Ever since becoming a mother myself, I feel such a kinship when I meet first-time parents-to-be. Because maternity sessions are later in the third trimester when mama’s belly is round and full, I’m immediately brought back to the way it felt for me. The nervous excitement of knowing that life is about to change forever, but not really quite understanding what that will mean. Being able to feel the baby’s every move, from hiccups to kicks, and being so aware of them every moment of the day. The uncanny duality of no longer feeling like yourself while simultaneously feeling like you’ve never been more in touch with yourself. Pregnancy… it’s a trip.
I started my maternity session with Megan and Dave by showing Megan the studio wardrobe selection. Though we’d discussed wardrobe over the phone and I had emailed photos of each dress that I thought might suit her, I wanted to take some time at the beginning of the session to go through each one again. Maternity sessions are so incredibly intimate – I wanted Megan to feel completely comfortable in my studio, in the gowns, and in her own skin. My entire wardrobe is open to my maternity clients, from gorgeous gowns to delicate chiffon, perfect for Beyonce “blowing in the wind” photo-ops. Megan had also brought a couple of dresses along with her that she loved, so we had a gorgeous selection of outfits to choose from.
I’ve always thought the pregnant form was a special kind of beautiful, and Megan certainly proved me right. Peaceful yet confident, the look in her eyes in the images from this session takes my breath away. I loved that her husband, Dave, took an active part in the session, and was even up for a few outfit changes as we incorporated some beautiful shots of the two of them as we went along. The love in their eyes is so evident as they look at each other, don’t you think? What a very lucky baby they are welcoming into the world.
